“a song for deers” 02’55”, color, sound, single channel video, 2008

이 제목의 그대로의 영상은 사슴을 위한 노래로 제작되었다. 이 리치몬드 공원(런던에 위치한) 에는 사슴들이 그들의 안식처로서 생활하고 그들의 인생을 살아간다. 하지만 많은 사람들이 해마다 그 수는 증가하며 사슴들의 배려심 따위는 없이 자신들의 편의를 위하여 이용하고 침범한다. 작가는 그러한 형태를 사슴들에게 감사와 사과를 표하며 어쩌면은 그 의상과 노래가 인류학적 인간에게는 추해 보일 수 있는 행태가 사슴들에게는 가깝고 친근하며 아름다울 수도 있겠다는 상상을 하며 이 노래를 바친다.

A song for deers is just as the title suggests, it is a song for deers. This video is recorded in Richmond park in London. In this park deers usually walk and enjoy their own lives within a very relaxing situation. However, many people use the park to jog, walk or drive through. More so now than the deers use it for themselves. The percentages of the people using the park are increasing.

The director would like to express her appreciation and apologies both. Wearing clothes, which look more familiar than others to the deers, artists sing a song while performing. This is meant as a song for deers rather than for humans.

슈뢰딩거는 엔트로피의 법칙을 통하여 인간의 본질에 대해 이야기한다. “살아있는 유기체는 지속적으로 고-엔트로피 상태로 진행되며 최대 엔트로피 상태, 즉 죽음이라는 위험한 상태에 접근하려는 경향을 지닌다. 이러한 물리학적인 죽음을 조금이라도 연장하기 위해 인간의 몸은 본능적으로 주위에서 지속적으로 다른 엔트로피들을 흡수하여 살아가고 있다. 이러한 몸의 본능적인 수행기능은 시간이 지나며 점차 퇴화하게 되고 기능의 소멸은 곧 인간의 죽음으로 발현된다.”

re;Turns 이라는 작품의 제목은 일반적으로 ‘회귀하다, 원점으로 돌아가다’ 라는 뜻으로 쓰이고 있지만 ‘수익, 이익’ 이라는 뜻도 함께 내포하고 있다. 오직 자신만의 이익을 위해 주변 상황은 돌아보지 못하고 앞만 보며 경쟁하는 현실의 끝에 어떠한 결과가 있을지 아무도 모른다. 우리 인류가 공존하기 위해 갖추어야 할 덕목이 무엇인지에 대해 고민해 볼 수 있는 메시지를 이 작품을 통해 은유적으로 표현한다.

 

The cells that the audiences did not choose, is nature itself. It harmonizes with the surrounding environment. As soon as people start to influence it, it becomes a predator. Its harmony no more, it rapidly makes the surrounding, its own. If a customer picks one of the cells one the screen with his or her finger, that cell becomes a predator and absorbs the other cells. As soon as the audience lets go of the finger, it throws up all the absorbed cells. Audiences, much like playing a game, become alerted against each other to maximize their own profit. When they can no longer gain profit, someone lets go of the finger, which then the thrown away cells are available for others to absorb again. The last man standing is bound to let go of the finger sooner or later. As soon as that happens, all the profits are poured out. Back to the beginning. Other audiences enter for a new competition. Predators steal and destroy their surroundings for their own profit. Predators compete with other predators for more profit.

Schrodinger talks about human nature through the entropy law. “Living organisms maintain high entropy and tend to get to maximum entropy, in other words, death. In order to extend this physical death, the human body instinctively absorbs other entropy from the surrounding. Such instinctive action degenerates as time pass, and the termination of such activity leads to human’s death.”

The title ‘Returns’ generally mean to go back or return, but it also has the meaning ‘profit’. No one knows what will be waiting at the end of the line of a person who chases after his or her own profit, without considering the surrounding environment. This piece metaphorically describes the message what virtues humanity must have in order to co-exist.

최고의 것이 있다고 생각하지 않는다.  최선을 다 해야 한다고도 생각하지 않는다.

나는 이 작업의 최소한의 방식만을 제공하고, 누구나가 누구나의 마음대로 이 작업을 만들어 나가도록 격려할 것이다. 각자의 다른 마음들이 서로 엉키고 설켜 비워진 공간이 채워져 나가는 그 과정을 기록하고 함께 지켜보고자 한다. 전시 기간 동안 여러 사람들에 의해 만들어지는 이 작업의 최종 형태를 예측할 수 없어서 설레며 과정 자체를 즐길 마음에 들뜬다.

I don’t think there’s the best thing. I don’t think we have to do the best either.

I’ll provide the least methods of this work and encourage people to make up the work in whatever way they want. I’d like to record and watch together, the progress of the empty space being filled by each individual mind that are related to one another. It is exciting that it’s impossible to predict the final form of this working which will be made up by many participants during the exhibition.

I think there’s the best thing, and we have to be the one. I think what is mine only is right. They differ from each other, are incomprehensive, and don’t even try to understand each other. They refuse to be mixed and persist in that position.

Human beings exist within the relationship. Directly, or indirectly through other mediums, we make relationship with others. And relationship causes interaction.Relationship between human beings can be expanded to relationship between human beings and machines. This work is the attempt to the possibility of the relationship and interaction between human beings and machines.

3차원 공간에서의 큐빅은 미완성된 가장 기초적인 입방체다. 가상공간 안의 인물의 얼굴은 완벽하지 않은 큐빅의 집합으로 아직 미완성되어 있으며 완만한 곡선을 갖추지 못해 투박하며 거칠지만 그는 자신의 얼굴이 부끄럽지 않다. 그러나 관객의 응시는 자신의 장애를 인지시키고, 자신의 몸을 타자화하여 자아를 스스로 無化시킨다. 화면의 얼굴은 부서지고 파편화 되어 그의 얼굴은 사라진다. 그를 향한 관객의 응시가 사라지면 그는 다시 자신의 모습을 찾지만 이미 그의 얼굴은 타자화 된 남의 얼굴이다.

His face is an aggregation of cubes, which is not perfect shape in three dimensional space since cube is not smooth,  but crude and rough, just like pixels without anti-aliasing. However, he in the art work doesn’t notice his disability until viewers gaze at his face. He ends up sensing his imperfection by people’s attention and fragments his face into small pieces. His face shows up after audience move to other works, but it is not his own face anymore. Instead, it becomes belonging to other people surrounding him.

Pipe City의 끝, 각각의 파이프 커버 안에는 현대 문명 속에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 자동차 경적 소리, 사람들의 대화소리, 발자국 소리, 지하철의 광고 메시지 등 일상적 구성 요소들이 자리하고 있다. 이러한 단순한 일상적 구성요소들은 기나긴 파이프를 통해 얽히고설키며 현대 문명이란 거대한 흐름을 만들어 낸다. 그리고 Pipe City는 현대문명의 작은 상징이 되어 간다.

Pipe City

Art Statement

Modern civilization pretends messed up structure but actually, this is just continuity of straight circulation. Each pipe’s cover represents car horn, step sound, subway’s commercial and etc. that we can easily experience in our ordinary life. These kind of small ordinary components make huge stream of civilization through long messed pipes. And finally, ‘Pipe City’ becomes a small symbol of human civilization.

 

복잡한 체계와 구조들로 얽혀진 것과 같이 보이는 현대 문명은 사실 단순화된 직립성 순환의 연속이다. Pipe City의 끝, 각각의 파이프 커버 안에는 현대 문명 속에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 자동차 경적 소리, 사람들의 대화소리, 발자국 소리, 지하철의 광고 메시지 등 일상적 구성 요소들이 자리하고 있다. 이러한 단순한 일상적 구성요소들은 기나긴 파이프를 통해 얽히고설키며 현대 문명이란 거대한 흐름을 만들어 낸다. 그리고 Pipe City는 현대문명의 작은 상징이 되어 간다.

 

Technology Statement

This is an interactive sound work using Cycling 74’s Max/MSP/Jitter software.

Sensors and sound modules are built in the pipe structure which react to participants when they open or close the pipe covers. Sounds played in the pipes are transformed gradually as sensor values vary.

 

이번 사운드 interactive 작업은 Cycling 74’s Max/MSP/Jitter software 를 사용하며, 사운드 모듈에 센서를 파이프 안에 장착하여 파이프 커버를 열었을 때 실시간 사운드 변형이 이뤄지게 된다.

Layer of the Memories

시간의 단면에서 현재의 나를 구성하는 중요 요소들을 추출한다. 그 기억들은 다양한 매체로 치환되어 설치되고, 또한 관객들이 설치된 오브제에 다가가면 그에 해당되는 음악이 재생된다. 재생된 음악들은 관객들의 주목에 의해 겹겹이 쌓여 하나의 음악으로 플레이 되면서 시간의 축적으로 이루어 져 있는 현재의 나를 암시한다.

Extract the significant elements of myself from the aspects of time. Those are installed and converted into various media. Getting close to installed object allows audiences to hear the sound for each object they are approaching. These layers of sound played by the audience form certain harmony, which implies that I’m composed of accumulated time that I have had until today.

Street Monster : Hollow One

This work is one of Street Monsters series that is expressed about urban legend.

It has similar fear between fear of ghost and media. Formless. If something is formless, we get fear easier. Because formless means we can not recognize what it is. But this work’s theme is not fear. JUST FORMLESS.

I want to tell about formless but not horrible expression. Fun and tricky expression will be better than horrible to tell about this work’s theme.

현대에 도시괴담을 바탕으로 하는 스트리트몬스터즈 연작.

형체가 없는 유령의 대한 공포감과 형체가 없는 미디어에 대한 공포는 비슷한 성격을 가지고 있다. 관심을 가지기 전까지는 인지하기 어렵지만 우리가 그에 대한 생각을 하는 순간 실체가 되기 시작한다. 하지만 이 작품은 공포가 주제는 아니다. 웃음과 함께 재미있는가가 그리고 이런 주제의식이 있다라는 이야기가 우선이다.

2000 Graduated from Changwon Namsan high school.
2005 Worked as a 2D Inferno Artisit at the Advertisement post production “Apex CG” in Seoul
2007 Made a “Soft Seoul” advertisement movie what was screened at 2007 public design expo as core designer.
